WHAT KIND of DENOMINATION is the UNITED CHURCH of CHRIST?

While our history and heritage is rooted in the pre-Colonial period of Congregational or “Pilgrim” churches, we are today a member-parish of a denomination -- the United Church of Christ.

The “UCC” as many of us refer to it, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on June 25, 1957 with the merger of four major Protestant churches:

    Congregational
    Christian
    Evangelical
    Reformed

These four major bodies came together to form a new denomination, the United Church of Christ.

The basic unit of the UCC is the local church. Each local church in the UCC enjoys autonomy in matters of governance and doctrine.

We are all joined together denominationally however, by our mutual consent to co-minister in covenant.” The word and practice of “covenant” is paramount to the UCC. For it is in covenant that we recognize one another’s ministry as we all work together to bear witness to Jesus Christ in the world. It is covenant that joins all UCC congregations together to form the Associations, Conferences, and General Synod that make up our denomination.

In the UCC we pride ourselves on our belief in the freedom of individual conscience. Our members and clergy are not required to pass any litmus test or to adhere to any particular dogma. While we are a Christian denomination which affirms the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we vary widely in our opinions of what that means for us as people. What matters to us is not consensus, but love and respect for one another. This can best be summed up in our denominational ethos: In essentials unity, in non-essentials diversity, in all things love.

What makes your church community special?
You will be welcomed but not pushed, invited but not forced, heard but not judged. No one will pry into your personal faith issues. We attract through our actions and our community of love, not through pushy conversations. We are a small but growing community of real people seeking a faith that works; a faith that can sustain us throughout each day.

We are calling ALL REAL HUMANS who are seeking a safe place to worship for themselves and their families.
